What it is
BPC stands for "Body Protection Compound." It's a lab-made copy of a fragment of a protective substance found naturally in human gastric juice — the fluid in your stomach.
That origin is the interesting part: your stomach lining survives an acidic environment that would damage most tissue, and researchers became curious about the protective factors that make that possible.
What researchers study it for
- Gut lining — unsurprising, given where it comes from. A large share of the animal literature looks at intestinal tissue.
- Tendon and ligament — connective tissue that heals slowly because of limited blood supply.
- Blood vessel formation — angiogenesis, the growth of new small vessels, is a recurring theme.
Now the part usually left out
The overwhelming majority of BPC-157 research is animal and laboratory work, largely in rodents. Well-controlled human trials are scarce.
That doesn't make the animal findings worthless — that's how research begins. But there is a real distance between "showed a consistent effect in rats" and "is proven in people," and BPC-157 has not crossed it.
Why the gap exists
Running a proper human trial costs millions and requires a sponsor who'll recover that investment. BPC-157 is a naturally-derived fragment, which complicates the commercial case for funding large trials. So it sits in an odd position: widely discussed, genuinely interesting in early research, and thinly evidenced in humans.
How to read claims about it
When you see a confident claim about BPC-157, ask one question: in what? Rats, a petri dish, or people? That single question separates most accurate statements from most inaccurate ones.
