You'll see "Research Use Only" on every product we sell. It is not legal boilerplate we're hiding behind — it's the entire basis on which these materials exist. Here's what it genuinely means.
The plain version
Research Use Only (RUO) means a material is supplied for laboratory research. It is not a medicine, not a supplement, and not intended for people or animals to consume.
An analogy that actually works
A chemistry set is excellent for learning and experiments. It is not a snack. Nothing about that is a criticism of the chemistry set — it's simply what the thing is for.
What RUO is not
- Not a loophole. It isn't a way to sell medicine without calling it medicine.
- Not a quality statement. RUO says nothing about purity. A material can be RUO and exceptionally pure, or RUO and poor quality. That's why a Certificate of Analysis matters separately.
- Not FDA-evaluated. RUO materials have not been assessed for safety or effectiveness in humans.
Why the distinction is enforced so carefully
Approval exists because proving something is safe and effective in people takes years of controlled trials. A compound can look promising in early research and still fail on safety at scale. The RUO line marks exactly where evidence currently stops.
What it means for how we write
You'll notice our product pages and directory describe what researchers are studying a compound for — never what it will do for you. That's deliberate. Writing "studied for appetite signalling" instead of "helps you lose weight" isn't us being coy; the first is supportable and the second isn't.
Questions worth asking any supplier
- Can I see the Certificate of Analysis for my lot number?
- Which independent lab performed the testing?
- Is every batch tested, or was one batch tested and the certificate reused?
